Mongolian Eagle Riders on Horseback Black and White Photography

Raised Eagles Above a Line of Riders on Rocky Ground

A line of riders holding eagles above their horses made this photograph during my travels in Mongolia. I kept the group spread across the frame, with rocky ground below and an open sky behind the birds. In black and white, the raised wings form a striking sequence above the darker horses and heavy clothing.

Each rider and eagle has a different outline. Some wings reach almost level across the sky, while others lift or curve downward, breaking the regular spacing of the group. The horses face in slightly different directions, and their pale and dark coats create changes in tone along the line. Low hills sit behind them, leaving the birds clear against the lighter sky. In the foreground, rough stones and uneven ground give the broad arrangement a close, textured base.

This journey included time with local families, shared meals, and nights in yurts heated by coal. Those experiences remain part of how I remember photographing the riders, alongside the landscape itself. For this image I wanted to hold the whole gathering together without losing the separate figures within it. The wider view lets me follow the rhythm of the raised eagles, then look more closely at a horse, a rider, or the feathers of an individual bird. That movement between the group and its details keeps bringing me back to the photograph.
