Riders and Horses Beneath a Rough Mountain Ridge
My wife and I spent a week with this group of eagle riders at a remote mountain camp in Mongolia. Shared meals and long stretches outdoors gave us time to settle into the pace of the camp. I made this photograph as the riders rested together on the slope, with their horses standing nearby. Watching from a little distance, I was drawn to the way the people and animals were distributed across the rough ground. I left the scene as it unfolded.
The riders gather in several small clusters, while the saddled horses introduce taller shapes between them. A pale horse stands apart at the right, balancing the groups toward the left and centre. The hillside occupies much more of the frame than the figures do. Its uneven surface, scattered stones and broken ridge make the scale of the setting apparent. Above that ridge, bright clouds give the sky a softer pattern, with darker areas between them.
Black and white allowed me to connect the textures of the clothing, horses and ground without colour pulling them apart. I wanted the eye to move across the groups rather than stop at a single rider. The space between each cluster matters to that movement, giving the photograph a natural rhythm. When I return to this image, I remember having enough time simply to watch. It holds a wider view of that week: people resting, horses waiting nearby, and the mountain landscape extending well beyond our small gathering.
