A Close Portrait Beneath a Fur Trimmed Hat
On the final day of a Mongolian eagle rider expedition, the riders allowed us to come closer with our cameras. We had been based at a remote mountain camp, with open country around us, and the atmosphere had become more relaxed by then. I made this portrait from only a few feet away. That short distance let me pay attention to the man’s face and the many textures surrounding it, rather than making the landscape part of the composition.
His fur-trimmed hat fills the upper part of the frame, with a feather rising into the softly blurred background. The heavy coat creates a broad, textured shape around his shoulders. Within that frame, his eyes, moustache and narrow beard remain sharply defined. I kept the crop close enough that the clothing enters at both sides, leaving very little to distract from the face. The zippered layer underneath adds a quieter surface among the longer strands of fur.
Black and white helped me bring these details into balance. The lighter fur catches the eye first, but the darker lines around his eyes and the shape of his beard draw attention back toward his expression. I remember the closeness of this encounter more than any single detail of the camp. There was time to look carefully, and he was willing to be photographed. I wanted the resulting image to retain that directness, with the face clear, the background understated and the clothing an integral part of the portrait.
