A Curving Path Beneath the Bridge Toward Its Suspension Tower
Standing on the walkway beneath Rainbow Bridge in Tokyo, I was drawn to the way its curve led toward the suspension span across the bay. The overhead structure sweeps through the top of this black and white photograph, while the tiled path and railings guide the eye through the foreground. Together, they give the view a strong sense of direction.
Closely repeated tiles follow the walkway as it bends left. The broad handrail on the right grows smaller along the same curve, with vertical supports adding a finer rhythm below it. Overhead, rows of structural fittings trace the underside of the span. Beyond the path, suspension cables descend toward the bridge deck, and a tower rises against the softer cloud bands. Buildings line the farther shore, with a small ferry visible on the water at the right.
I photographed this view in 2025, interested in the relationship between the route beneath my feet and the much larger bridge around it. I kept the path prominent so that the distant tower could be reached visually through the nearer curves. Monochrome connects the different surfaces without losing the tile pattern, railings, or cable lines. The ferry provides a smaller point of scale within the bay, balancing the close presence of the structure overhead. For me, the photograph holds a particular experience of Tokyo’s waterfront: looking through a network of connected forms while moving along one of them.
