Nagasaki Temple Gate Black and White Japanese Architecture Photography

Curved Roof Tiles and Carved Brackets Above Open Wooden Doors

I photographed this temple gate while standing in the grounds in Nagasaki, Japan, with wind moving through the surrounding trees. Its tiled roof and dense arrangement of wooden brackets drew my attention above the open entrance. In black and white, the repeated roof shapes and carved details become a clear architectural pattern against the pale sky.

The roof reaches broadly across the frame, with the eaves lifting at the ends and rows of tiles stepping toward the ridge. Beneath it, interlocking supports fill the space above a dark signboard. Two wooden doors stand open, allowing a view of trees beyond the threshold. The lower tiled roof at the left adds another layer, while the stone paving leads toward the gate from the foreground.

I wanted to show the detail of the structure without losing its role as an entrance. The open passage gives the eye somewhere to go after following the brackets and tiles overhead. Soft, overcast light holds the grain of the wood, the carved forms, and the separate roof surfaces without a hard shadow obscuring them. The nearby foliage also breaks up the building's regular lines. For me, the photograph rests on that balance between a carefully ordered gateway and the garden visible through and around it, keeping the architecture connected to the place where I encountered it.
