Nagasaki Temple Guardian Statue Black and White Sculpture Photography

A Raised Hand and Tall Headpiece Against a Pale Background

I photographed this temple guardian figure in Nagasaki, Japan, keeping the background quiet so its pose and outline could carry the image. One hand is raised beside a tall headpiece, while the other holds a long, straight blade close to the body. In black and white, the sculpture's clothing, facial detail, and worn surfaces become its main points of interest.

The face turns to the right, with a narrow moustache and pointed beard sharpening the profile. Draped clothing creates broad curves around the torso, then opens into smaller patterns and folds near the legs. Dark boots and the pedestal give the lower part of the figure a firm base. The raised arm forms a separate curve above the shoulder, balancing the straight line that runs down the front of the body.

I wanted to leave enough space around the guardian for those gestures to remain easy to read. Soft light reveals changes across the surface, including small chips and finer marks, without making the background compete with the figure. I find that the closer details reward a different kind of attention from the overall silhouette: the face and patterned clothing invite inspection, while the pose remains clear from farther away. Keeping both in the photograph lets the sculpture hold its character through form and texture, just as it did when I stood in front of it.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
