Japanese Umbrella in Kanazawa Interior Black and White Photography

An Open Umbrella Beside Sliding Doors and Sunlit Tatami

An open Japanese umbrella rests on the wooden floor of this Kanazawa interior, its pale ribs radiating across a dark canopy. I photographed the room in Ishikawa Prefecture in 2025, drawn to the way late morning light connected that circular shape with the straight lines of the floor, doorway, and wall.

The umbrella sits at an angle, exposing its inner framework and the woven detail around the centre. Its handle reaches toward the foreground, where the canopy casts a broad shadow across the boards. Behind it, wooden sliding doors lead toward a room with tatami flooring. Light enters from the left, picking out the edges of the door panels and leaving the farther interior in darker tones. The plain wall above the umbrella provides a generous area of space around its detailed surface.

I remember being interested in the ordinary objects and materials of this quiet room. The umbrella gave the composition a focal point, but the floor and doorway were equally important to how I saw it. Their long lines draw the eye inward before the curve of the canopy brings it back. In black and white, I could keep that exchange clear while retaining the small differences in texture. The photograph offers a close look at a traditional Japanese interior through a simple arrangement of light, space, and a familiar object. It is the contrast between the delicate framework and the room’s sturdy geometry that I return to.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
