Otaru Steam Clock at Night Black and White Photography
An Illuminated Clock Outside Otaru Music Box Hall
On a cold evening in Otaru, the steam clock outside the Music Box Hall stood brightly against the dark sky. I photographed it beside the building’s brick façade and an illuminated tree, keeping the wet pavement along the lower edge of the frame. In black and white, the scene becomes an arrangement of clock faces, arched windows, masonry and small points of light.
The clock’s connection to Vancouver adds another interest to the setting. It was made by Raymond Saunders, the maker of the Gastown steam clock, and stands here in Hokkaido beside a distinctly different streetscape. I liked that unexpected link during my visit, but it was the light on the building and clock that shaped this photograph.
From this angle, two clock faces are visible above the long glazed body. Behind them, the entrance sits below an arched upper window and a triangular pediment. Pale stone surrounds contrast with the darker brick, while the tree at the right brings a softer pattern of lights into the composition. The pavement reflects a narrow band of brightness, grounding the view in the street rather than leaving the building suspended in darkness.
I wanted to hold the quiet atmosphere of that winter evening without losing the architecture’s detail. The monochrome tones bring the clock and façade together, with the lit tree offering a gentle seasonal accent. For someone who enjoys Japan’s streetscapes or architectural night photography, the image brings a particular Otaru corner into a room. It remains a memory of standing there in the cold and watching the light settle across these different surfaces.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
