A Silent Gaze Shaped By Light And Shadow
I made this portrait at the gentleman’s workplace in Kochi, India. He agreed to be photographed but said nothing, and I did not direct his posture or ask him to change his expression. He simply stood there in silence and looked toward the camera. That unguarded encounter is what gives this image its place within my street photography wall art collection. Nothing was staged, and nothing needed to be added.
The first thing I notice is his gaze. One eye catches the available light with remarkable clarity while the other recedes into shadow. His brow is drawn, his mouth is firm, and every line in his face is rendered with uncompromising detail. A pale mark runs vertically down his forehead, becoming a small but important point of contrast within the dark frame. His light clothing emerges at the bottom of the composition, while the large area of negative space surrounding him gives the portrait room to breathe.
I have often returned to the body language in this photograph. His expression is almost disturbing in its stillness, but I do not read it as empty. It seems guarded, weary, and deeply inward. I cannot know what circumstances shaped that gesture, and I do not want to invent a story for him. The photograph is strongest when it leaves that question unanswered. It records a brief human exchange while allowing the man to retain his privacy and complexity.
This is one of those moments when daily life photography from India reveals more through restraint than action. I was there, inside his working environment, close enough to feel the silence between us. The portrait was photographed on location as I encountered it, without coaching or recreating the moment afterward.
The toned monochrome treatment removes the distraction of color and concentrates attention on light, skin, texture, and expression. Deep blacks surround the face, while the highlights across his eye, cheek, and hair create a strong sculptural presence. The horizontal composition makes the photograph particularly effective above a sofa, console, desk, or low cabinet, where the negative space can remain visually expansive. It would suit a contemporary, minimalist, or quietly dramatic interior, especially for someone drawn to human stories rather than decorative imagery alone.
Each limited edition print is personally signed and includes a certificate of authenticity. The photograph is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the tonal separation, fine facial detail, and depth of the original image. The edition is limited to ten prints.

This photograph is released as a signed and numbered limited edition of only 10 prints in total across all available sizes combined—not 10 prints in each size.
Every size is drawn from the same edition. Whether the photograph is purchased as a small print or at the largest available size, it uses one of the 10 edition numbers.
I personally sign and number each print on the reverse, and every print is accompanied by a signed Certificate of Authenticity recording its title, dimensions, medium, edition number, and date of issue.
Once all 10 prints have been sold, the edition will be permanently closed. No additional numbered editions of the photograph will be produced in another size or format.

I personally produce every photograph using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper with a subtle luster finish.
The paper provides rich tonal depth, excellent fine-detail reproduction, and a refined surface that reduces distracting glare under normal indoor lighting. It is especially well suited to both color and black-and-white photography.
Each photograph is sold as an unframed fine art print, allowing it to be framed according to the collector’s space and personal style.
Before a print leaves my studio, I carefully inspect it for color, tonal accuracy, surface quality, and overall presentation. Nothing is outsourced, and every finished print passes through my hands.

Worldwide delivery is included in the listed price, so there is no additional shipping charge added during checkout. I select an appropriate tracked delivery service based on the destination, print size, and current shipping requirements.
Delivery times vary by destination and may be affected by customs processing or circumstances beyond my control.
Because I also travel extensively to create new photographic work, studio dispatch may occasionally be delayed while I am away. When that happens, the print will be produced and shipped as soon as I return to the studio.
