Stone Walls Climb the Hills Between a Series of Towers

The Great Wall of China changes direction again and again in this black and white photograph. From a tiled-roof structure near the foreground, its stone line climbs over the hills toward a series of towers. I was drawn to how clearly the wall’s route can be followed, even as the surrounding slopes grow softer with distance.

The nearest section bends across the lower part of the scene, revealing brickwork, small openings and the edge of its walkway. Further up, the wall turns sharply before continuing along a ridge. The towers become stopping points for the eye, each one marking another change in the land’s height and direction.

I photographed this view in 2015. The monochrome treatment lets the structure stand apart from the hillside without removing the landscape’s texture. Dark trees and lighter scrub cover the slopes, while the pale sky gives the upper towers a simple backdrop. I like the relationship between the wall’s deliberate construction and the uneven ground that it follows.

For a study, living room or hallway, this print brings an architectural subject with a strong sense of place. It may appeal to someone who has travelled in China or enjoys buildings seen within their landscapes. There is enough detail to explore close up, but the winding route remains clear from across a room. What holds my attention is that continuous line of stone, always adapting to the next hill.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
