Layered Homes and Red Roofs Across an Istanbul Neighbourhood
Apartment buildings crowd the view across Beyoğlu, their warm facades and red roofs forming a dense cityscape. From this elevated perspective, Istanbul appears as many smaller places gathered together rather than one dominant landmark. I photographed the scene in colour, drawn to the layered arrangement of homes and the light resting on their walls.
A larger ochre building on the left provides a clear foreground anchor. Beyond it, pale yellow, cream and muted pink facades overlap at different heights. Roof terraces, small windows and satellite dishes add finer detail, while occasional trees interrupt the built pattern with darker green. A strip of blue sky remains above the farthest buildings, giving the city a quiet upper edge.
I like the way the photograph changes as the eye moves through it. Nearby roofs and windows are individually readable, while the more distant buildings gather into smaller blocks of colour. There is no single route to follow; the view invites you to choose a roofline, trace it for a while, then find another. That complexity is part of the neighbourhood’s character.
Made in 2014, this image holds the scale of everyday Istanbul through its residential architecture. Its warm palette can bring colour and a sense of place to a study, hallway or living room.
