Two Figures And A Boat In The Golden Surf
The setting sun leaves a bright path across the surf at Pollenthai Beach, India. Beside that reflection, two fishermen and a small boat appear in dark silhouette. I made this photograph in 2010, bringing the work at the water’s edge into the same frame as the broad, warm evening sky.
One man stands in the shallows beside the boat, while the other is positioned farther along its hull. Their outlines remain distinct against the water, but their faces and clothing fall into shadow. The boat points into the waves, giving this quiet coastal scene a sense of purpose. I find that small human presence more compelling than an empty view of the sunset alone.
Low waves cross the photograph in uneven horizontal bands. White foam breaks along their edges, and the sunlight catches different patches of water as it reaches toward the sand. The brightest reflection runs almost down the centre, just to the left of the fishermen. Above the horizon, the sun is a small luminous circle within a sky that moves from gold toward muted rose and brown.
A narrow strip of wet beach anchors the bottom of the composition. Beyond it, the ocean and sky leave plenty of open space around the figures. That balance lets the photograph read both as a sunset seascape and as a glimpse of coastal working life. Its warm colour and simple silhouettes bring a measured, human scale to a room, particularly for someone drawn to India, fishing communities or evenings beside the sea.
