Coonoor Hillside Houses Black and White Architectural Landscape Photography
Pale Rectangular Homes Step Up A Dark Slope
Small pale houses repeat across this steep hillside in Coonoor, India. Their simple rectangular fronts and dark openings create a clear pattern against the uneven ground. I photographed the scene in 2010, drawn to the way the buildings occupy different levels while remaining closely connected as a group.
The houses near the bottom are larger in the frame, with roofs, doors and shuttered windows easy to distinguish. Higher up, similar forms become smaller and more widely spaced. Each sits at its own angle, so the arrangement never becomes a perfect grid. I find that variation important: it gives the repeated shapes a natural rhythm that follows the hill.
Black and white makes the contrast between walls and terrain especially strong. The light facades stand out from dark grass, low plants and rough patches of ground. Open doors appear almost black, while closed shutters carry softer grey tones. Narrow paths and sloping spaces between the houses offer glimpses of how the separate levels meet.
A longer building runs across the lower edge, introducing a horizontal line beneath the smaller homes. Above them, the hillside continues without a visible skyline, keeping attention on the relationship between architecture and land. The photograph is an architectural landscape built from many modest structures rather than one dominant landmark. Its repeating pale shapes and textured setting make it an engaging monochrome print for someone interested in Indian hillside communities or the patterns created by buildings on uneven terrain.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
