Chinese Garden Koi Pond Red and Orange Colour Nature Photography

Dense Fish Patterns Beneath Soft Ripples And Reflections

Red and orange fish spread across the pond in a dense, shifting pattern. I photographed them in the Garden of Harmonious Pleasures in China in 2015. Sunlight on the water drew my attention as much as the fish themselves, bringing their bright bodies forward while reflections changed the surface above them.

The strongest concentration sits across the middle and lower right of the photograph. Individual fish point in different directions, their narrow shapes overlapping into a broader flow. Toward the left, more open water separates them. That change in density gives the image room to breathe even though the pond is full of small, colourful forms.

Blue grey reflections enter from the upper left and spread toward the centre. Darker reflected shapes cross the upper edge, while gentle ripples break them into uneven bands. I like how those surface marks interact with the fish underneath: one pattern is made by reflected light, another by the many bodies below. Neither remains completely separate from the other.

Colour carries the energy of this scene. Bright reds and warm oranges stand against muted brown and blue tones, making the photograph lively without needing a single central subject. At a distance, it can read as an abstract field of colour; closer viewing brings the fish into focus. For someone who enjoys Chinese gardens, koi ponds or nature photographs with strong colour, it offers a detailed view of life just beneath the water’s surface.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
