Weathered Red Doors at the Great Wall of China Wall Art

Repeated Lattice Panels Across a Worn Wooden Facade

Red woodwork fills the view, divided into repeated panels of lattice and worn painted surfaces. Thick vertical posts separate the sections, while horizontal beams give the facade a clear structure. I photographed these doors at the Great Wall of China in 2015, drawn to the pattern within a smaller architectural detail.

The pale areas behind the lattice make its fine grid especially easy to see. Narrow bars repeat within each panel, but the arrangements vary between the upper and lower sections. Near the centre, one darker opening interrupts the lighter sequence, giving the eye a small point of contrast.

The wood below the lattice carries a different kind of detail. Red paint has worn into pale streaks and uneven patches, following the grain and the edges of individual panels. I like how those irregular marks sit within such an orderly framework. The larger posts remain strong vertical lines, even where their own surfaces show wear.

I kept only a narrow strip of stone pavement along the bottom. It anchors the doors without taking attention away from the red facade, allowing the repeated rectangles and surface textures to fill the photograph.

This print offers a Chinese architectural subject with a graphic quality. It can bring warm red colour into a room, while the lattice pattern and worn wood provide more to explore than a single bold shape. The photograph’s character comes from that balance: an ordered design, made individual by the variations across its painted surface.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
