Red Door and Ornate Knocker Mongolia Architectural Photography
A Gold Toned Face Against Weathered Red Paint
The gold-toned face sits just beyond a sharp division between pale plaster and red paint. I photographed this ornate door knocker in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, in 2023. What stopped me was the combination of the small, detailed metalwork and the much larger areas of worn colour surrounding it.
The face has broad eyes, curled features and a heavy ring hanging below its mouth. Darker patches remain within the ornament's recesses, giving the brighter surface more depth. I left space around it rather than filling the frame with the knocker alone. That decision allows the red door to become an important part of the photograph.
A vertical strip of pale wall occupies the left side. Its rough, uneven surface contrasts with the finer cracks in the door's paint, while the straight boundary gives the composition a firm line. The knocker sits to the right of that division, balancing the broad red field without making the whole image symmetrical.
I like how the photograph can be read in two ways. From farther away, it is a simple arrangement of red, pale cream and gold. A closer look reveals the face, hanging ring and variations in the surrounding surfaces. It brings strong colour and a compact architectural subject to an entryway or study. The worn finish remains visible throughout, giving the graphic arrangement the texture of a real doorway I encountered.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
