Dark Rock Faces Beneath Bright Antarctic Snow Ridges
Snow picks out every ledge in this Antarctic mountain photograph. I brought the view close to the peaks, filling a square frame with dark rock, bright slopes, and a small band of blue sky. The colour is restrained, but the contrast gives the mountain a strong presence.
The broad central face is what holds my attention. Its rough texture remains visible between the snow lines, while the upper ridge becomes much smoother and lighter. To the left, a separate rocky point makes a darker edge. I like how these forms fit together without becoming symmetrical; the eye moves between them, finding smaller cuts and shelves along the way.
I kept the sky narrow because the detail in the mountain was the reason for the photograph. The blue gives the peaks a clean outline without taking attention away from the rock. Shadows within the gullies make the snow look deeper, and the small variations in white keep the slopes from reading as one blank surface.
This square Antarctic landscape print works for someone drawn to mountain structure as much as mountain scenery. It brings the clarity of snow and rock into a room, with enough detail for a close look and a clear silhouette from across the space. I return to the meeting of those two textures: the hard, broken cliff face and the softer snow gathering along its edges.
