Soul Sound Record Shop Black and White Americana Photography
Hand Painted Signs Beside a Van and Weathered Storefront
The words “Soul Sound Record Shop” appear twice in this photograph: above the entrance and on a large board leaning outside. Those signs give the small building a strong identity. I photographed this rural American storefront in 2007, with a van parked beside it and trees rising behind the low roof. The scene has the particular character of a place shaped by everyday use.
I enjoy how the lettering draws attention before the finer architectural details come into view. Barred windows flank the narrow entrance, and the awning breaks the straight line of the facade. Weathered boards, climbing growth and the neighbouring structure make a textured backdrop. The van adds another set of horizontal lines, linking the shop to the road across the foreground.
Black and white lets those different surfaces sit together. The light signboard stands out against the darker windows, while the pale body of the van balances the building on the left. My eye moves between the hand painted words and the surrounding details, finding the music shop within a broader roadside scene rather than treating its sign as an isolated subject.
For someone who loves record shops, music culture or American roadside photography, this image offers a familiar kind of appeal. I value the individuality of the storefront: modest in scale, rich in lettering, and surrounded by the textures of its setting. On a wall, that combination gives the photograph both an immediate subject and smaller details to return to.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
