Chrome and Roadside Decals Fill a Souvenir Shop Display
A classic Pontiac front fills this Route 66 souvenir shop photograph, its hood covered in colorful decals above a wide chrome grille. I photographed the display straight on, letting the paired headlights and central hood strip give the scene a strong symmetry. Around the car, signs and hanging souvenirs crowd the wall, making the vehicle part of a lively roadside collection.
The Pontiac’s design remains clear beneath the decoration. Round headlights sit at either side, and several horizontal grille bars spread outward from the center. The bumper adds another bright curve below them, with reflections crossing its metal surface. I like how the polished forms hold their own even where the surrounding display becomes busy with small shapes and lettering.
The stickers change the hood into a patchwork. Each decal has its own colors and outline, yet together they follow the car’s broad curves. Behind it, advertising signs repeat that mix of words and pictures at a larger scale. The checkerboard floor brings a final pattern beneath the bumper, its red and pale squares giving the lower frame a warm base.
For me, this is a photograph of roadside enthusiasm expressed through an unusual display. The Pontiac provides a familiar face, while the decals and souvenirs surround it with reminders of travel and collecting. Someone who enjoys classic cars or Route 66 stops may find plenty to examine beyond the first glance. My eye returns to the chrome grille, then wanders upward across the stickers to the crowded signs behind it.
