Antique Gas Pumps and Route 66 Signs Americana Photography
A Crowded Display of Weathered Arizona Roadside Relics
There is hardly an empty corner in this display. Antique gasoline pumps stand behind a small wheeled chassis, with road signs and a railroad crossing sign leaning into the same space. I photographed the collection in Ash Fork, Arizona, where the objects bring the visual language of Route 66 together beneath a corrugated roof.
The pumps provide the tallest shapes, but the overlapping signs keep the eye moving between them. Faded reds, pale lettering, and rust-brown metal form a muted colour palette. Some surfaces are deeply scarred; others still carry readable logos. The contrast between those surviving words and the surrounding wear is a large part of the photograph’s appeal for me.
Rather than isolate one pump, I kept the crowded arrangement intact. The diagonal railroad crossbuck cuts across the straighter pump faces, while the low chassis gives the foreground a broad horizontal shape. The roof presses down above everything, making the collection feel contained without making it orderly. There is always another piece to find behind the first one.
What interests me is the accumulation of familiar roadside forms. These were practical objects, designed to direct travellers or serve vehicles, and their lettering still gives them a distinct presence. In the photograph, they also become an arrangement of texture, shape, and worn colour. It is an Americana print that invites a closer look at the physical remnants of automobile travel, with all their rough edges still visible.
