Abandoned Ontario Motel With Graffiti Black and White Photography

Cracked Pavement Leads to a Graffiti Covered Motel

The cracked pavement gives this Ontario motel a rough foreground before the building itself comes into view. I photographed its low roof and long wall of horizontal siding beside a leafy tree, with grass breaking through the open ground. In black and white, the pale siding, dark window openings and bold outlines of graffiti become the main elements of the scene.

The building changes character around its corner. The long side stretches across the left of the photograph, while the darker brick frontage faces the space on the right. I like how that turn makes the motel feel substantial even though it sits low in the frame. The tree interrupts its straight lines, and the clearer sky above leaves room for the roof and foliage to stand out. Rather than reducing the scene to a single damaged detail, I kept the pavement, building and surrounding growth together.

This is an abandoned place recorded through the surfaces still visible: marks on the siding, uneven ground and windows that no longer offer a welcoming entrance. I am drawn to the contrast between the motel’s orderly shape and the less orderly textures around it. For a wall, the photograph brings that combination of architectural simplicity and weathered detail into a monochrome image, with plenty to notice beyond the first impression of an empty roadside building.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
