California Route 66 Lone Fuel Pump Black and White Roadside Photography
Weathered Station Walls and Rough Fencing Across Open Gravel
My wife and I drove Route 66 from Chicago to Santa Monica in our Jeep with a rooftop tent, following every surviving stretch of the old highway we could find. That approach led us to roadside places like this California gas station. I photographed it in 2022, drawn to the old fuel pump standing on its concrete base in front of the weathered building and rough wooden fencing.
The pump gives the image a clear foreground subject. Its battered rectangular body remains upright in an open patch of gravel, separated from the denser arrangement behind it. I like that spacing because it lets the small structure hold its own against the larger station. Dark openings and worn edges make its remaining shape easy to read.
Beyond it, the building has a damaged roofline and several open windows. Boards, posts, wheels and other fragments gather along the fence, each adding another piece of texture to the scene. Those details are what keep bringing me back to the photograph; a closer look reveals something that was easy to miss at first.
Black and white allows the weathered surfaces and overlapping shapes to remain distinct. The broader gravel foreground and open sky give the station a sense of space within its desert setting. As a print, this photograph offers a detailed Route 66 subject, suited to an interest in abandoned architecture, old fuel equipment and the roadside remnants found while following the original highway.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
