A Glance Beneath The Trees In Manhattan | Limited Edition of 10
Woman Resting Against Stone Wall In Manhattan Park
There are moments in Manhattan when the city briefly softens—when the sound of traffic fades just enough, and the canopy of trees takes over from concrete and glass. I spend a lot of time looking for those pockets of calm. They’re where people seem to forget they’re being watched, even if only for a second.
This portrait came together along a shaded stone wall in one of those quieter green spaces tucked between avenues. She had paused, leaning slightly into the stone's texture, her arm resting back as the leaves behind her filtered the light into shifting patterns across her shoulders and hair. There’s a tension in the frame that’s subtle but present—between posture and expression, between stillness and movement, between someone aware of themselves and someone simply taking a breath in the middle of the day.
The natural light moves softly across the contours of her face and collarbone, breaking through the foliage above and dissolving into the background. What remains is a composition built from texture—fabric, skin, weathered stone, scattered leaves—each element holding its place without overpowering the rest. The monochrome treatment keeps the focus grounded in tone rather than colour, allowing those tactile details to carry the visual weight.
I photographed this on location during an afternoon walk through Manhattan, working slowly along the edge of the park and letting the light dictate where I stopped. Nothing staged. Just a quiet exchange between subject and environment that existed for a moment and then disappeared into the rest of the day.
I personally sign each print and include a certificate of authenticity. It’s produced using archival pigment inks on museum-grade fine art paper to preserve the tonal depth and surface detail captured in this portrait.
