Edmonton Commercial Hotel Sign Black and White Photography
Hotel Lettering Above the Brickwork of Whyte Avenue
Looking up from Whyte Avenue in Edmonton, I found this hotel sign extending out from a brick façade into a pale, clouded sky. The black and white photograph brings together the tall HOTEL lettering and the broader Commercial Licensed sign beneath it. Bare branches fill the left side, while the building rises sharply along the right. It is a view of the street through one distinctive piece of its everyday architecture.
I photographed the sign while walking this stretch of the city during my travels. From the sidewalk, its supporting arms become almost as prominent as the lettering. Horizontal bars, diagonal cables and a narrow ladder form a framework between the sign and the wall. The upper letters are widely spaced; below them, the word Commercial sits above the sweeping script of Licensed. Those different styles give the composition its rhythm. Brick courses and pale stone bands carry the eye upward behind the sign, with the windows following the same steep perspective.
What interested me was how much character survived in the details: small marks along the sign face, the visible tubing, the rounded ends and the strong metal supports. I kept the cloudy sky and the tangled branches in the photograph because they soften that rigid construction. The result suits a room where city photography and vintage signage have a place, particularly for someone with a connection to Edmonton. For me, it preserves the pleasure of noticing an individual building feature during an unhurried walk.
