Faded Red Paint and Riveted Panels Around a Curved Wing Joint
Red paint and pale worn patches cover the aircraft surface in this close photograph from Alaska. Rows of rivets follow the panel seams, and a curved wing joint enters from the lower right. I made the image during an overland trip in 2011, drawn to the colour and texture of a retired Douglas C-47 rather than only its overall silhouette.
Some areas retain a strong red finish, while others are lighter and streaked with wear. The long seams run at different angles through the frame, crossing smaller clusters of rivets. Near the bottom, the wing edge has a darker, chipped surface that separates it from the red panels behind. That projecting form provides depth within a view otherwise filled by the aircraft’s skin. The irregular paint sits over a much more orderly arrangement of fasteners and joints.
Walking around the grounded aircraft, I found that looking closely revealed details that were less apparent from farther away. I kept the frame tight so the repeated rivets and broad changes in colour could establish their own composition, with the wing joint still giving a recognizable connection to the plane. The photograph holds the appeal of aviation detail alongside a more abstract study of a weathered surface. For me, its strongest quality is the tension between the carefully joined panels and the uneven finish across them. Both remain visible, giving the bright red its texture and the aircraft its particular character.
