Raised Wings Above A Field Of Resting Seabirds
Black legged kittiwakes gather across the water in this Alaska photograph from 2011. Many birds sit on the surface, while several closer to the camera are caught with their wings raised or spread. I find that mixture of stillness and movement more engaging than a flock presented as one uniform pattern.
The nearest flying birds are large enough to show their pale bodies, darker wings and black tips. Each occupies a different position above the water, introducing separate diagonals into the scene. One near the centre has its wings lifted high, while another farther right reaches outward. Their changing shapes give the foreground a lively rhythm.
Behind them, the resting birds become smaller and more numerous. They form a scattered field of light points across darker water, with short reflections and fine ripples around them. There is no shoreline or sky in the frame. The photograph stays entirely with the birds and the surface they occupy, allowing the group to suggest depth through scale alone.
Black and white makes the pale plumage stand out without turning the water into a blank background. Small horizontal ripples remain visible from the foreground to the farther gathering, tying the scene together. My interest here is in the separate gestures within the flock: the lifted wing, the low glide and the bird resting between them. The print combines the detail of a wildlife photograph with a broader pattern of seabirds, making it a distinctive coastal nature scene for an understated room.
