Blue Crater Interiors Within Orange And Pale Mineral Ground
Flying my drone above the geothermal landscape near Lake Mývatn revealed patterns I could not take in from the ground. Two blue crater interiors became the anchors of the view, surrounded by uneven bands of orange, grey, and pale earth. I made this photograph while exploring northern Iceland in 2022. Looking straight down let me concentrate on the shapes and colours rather than a distant horizon, turning the landscape into a close study of its surfaces.
The larger crater sits to the right, its cracked rim enclosing a broad area of blue. The smaller hollow has a narrower, more irregular outline. Around them, dark patches and lighter deposits form curves that join and separate across the ground. I was particularly drawn to the cool blue beside the warmer orange tones. Neither colour appears as a flat block; both contain variations and textures that make the photograph more interesting at close range. The square composition keeps those two forms in conversation with the ground between them.
This aerial perspective is part of what I enjoy about photographing Iceland. A place can change completely when seen from above, revealing arrangements that remain difficult to recognize at eye level. Here, the overall pattern suggests an abstract painting, while the cracks and rough edges keep it connected to the physical landscape. As contemporary nature wall art, the photograph offers strong colour without needing a conventional mountain or sky view. I find myself returning to the blue hollows first, then following the smaller marks and shifting earth tones around them.
