Whalers Bay Abandoned Hangar Antarctica Photograph

A Weathered Hangar Across An Open Gravel Shore

The hangar sits low beneath a broad, pale sky at Whalers Bay on Deception Island. In this Antarctic photograph, I left generous space around the abandoned building, allowing the dark gravel shore and almost featureless sky to become part of the subject. Its grey exterior and faint rust tones give the colour image a particularly restrained palette.

I made the photograph in 2011. What interests me is the building’s presence within so much open ground. The roof and walls form a compact block of lines near the horizon, while a single upright post stands closer to the camera on the right. That post creates a second point of attention without competing with the hangar.

Looking more closely, the structure becomes less regular. Light and dark roof panels form a loose pattern, the wall surfaces are streaked, and small window openings sit near ground level. A thin bank of snow stretches along the base, brightening the boundary between the building and the shore. I like the way these modest details reward a closer look after the larger arrangement has registered.

Rather than crowd the frame with the hangar, I wanted to show the distance around it. The photograph has room to breathe, but the weathered surfaces keep it from becoming empty. It would suit a space drawn to quiet architecture, neutral colours, and remote landscapes: an image in which one abandoned building gives scale to a much wider setting.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
