Whalers Bay Collapsing Building and Snow Black and White Antarctic Photography
Broken Rooflines Beneath Cloud Softened Mountain Slopes
The roof bends and drops where part of this Whalers Bay building has given way. I photographed the scene in Antarctica in 2011, drawn to the weathered timber, open windows and uneven structure against snow marked mountain slopes. Dark ground fills the foreground, interrupted by pale strips of snow and scattered pieces of material. The building stretches across the middle of the frame, giving the photograph a clear subject within a much larger setting.
I like how the damaged roof changes the rhythm of an otherwise simple form. Its broad panels run at different angles, with gaps exposing the darker spaces beneath. The walls carry peeling surfaces and a row of window openings that remain easy to recognise. Those familiar architectural features make the distortion of the building feel more noticeable. Small details reward a close look: rough boards, edges of roof panels and the broken supports near the centre.
Black and white connects the building’s pale walls with the snow behind and in front of it. Darker roof sections and exposed ground provide weight below the softer mountain view. Cloud obscures the upper slopes, leaving the building more sharply defined than the terrain beyond. This Antarctic photograph can suit an interest in remote places, abandoned structures and the textures they acquire over time. For me, its quiet presence comes from the way a damaged building remains legible within the scene, with ordinary windows and rooflines set against snow, open ground and a mountain that fades into the cloud.

About My Fine Art Photography
Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.
I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.
My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
