Whalers Bay Abandoned Whaling Station Black and White Photography

A Damaged Building Below Snow Streaked Antarctic Slopes

A long abandoned building sits below dark, snow streaked slopes at Whalers Bay on Deception Island, Antarctica. I photographed it with the surrounding ground still prominent, so the structure remains a relatively small part of the landscape. Its straight walls and rooflines are easy to distinguish from the rounded mounds behind it, even where sections of the building have lost their original shape.

The centre is the most visibly damaged area. Part of the wall and roof has dropped inward, exposing darker spaces and angled pieces within the structure. Toward either end, windows and doorways remain clearer. I like the way those more regular openings help me read the building before my attention returns to the disrupted middle. The weathered exterior carries fine horizontal texture, while the roof has larger pale surfaces and darker broken sections.

Black and white brings the structure into the same range of tones as its setting. Snow forms bright, irregular bands across the dark ground and continues up the slopes behind it. The building sits between those larger patches, with its pale walls standing apart from the foreground. I wanted to retain that relationship between a recognisable human structure and the broad Antarctic terrain around it. The station’s history belongs to the place, but this photograph stays with what remains visible: a worn building, its damaged centre and the snow and exposed ground continuing beyond it.

About My Fine Art Photography

Every photograph in my collection comes from my own travels, explorations, and years behind the camera.

I create my work as photographic art rather than mass-produced decoration. From street portraits and abandoned places to landscapes, architecture, and the unusual subjects I discover along the way, each image begins with something that made me stop and look.

My photographs are available in multiple sizes so the same image can work in anything from an intimate wall space to a large statement installation.
