SS Sapona Shipwreck in Turquoise Bahamian Water Colour Photography
Open Hull Supports Beneath a Broad Blue Sky
Turquoise water and a generous blue sky surround the remains of the SS Sapona in this photograph off Bimini, Bahamas. The wreck sits low across the frame, with its taller end rising on the right and a long row of exposed supports reaching left. When I approached with my camera, it was that combination of solid wall and open framework that held my attention. The ship has a strong presence, but the space above it keeps the view open.
Colour makes the worn surfaces particularly interesting here. Rust tones run through the pale walls and down the supports, while small patches of blue remain among the marks and openings. The water brings those warm surfaces into contrast with a much cooler foreground. I can follow the repeated gaps along the hull, then return to the rough wall on the right and find a different arrangement of shapes each time. White clouds spread above the wreck without obscuring its outline.
I wanted the photograph to hold both the structure’s deterioration and the brightness of its surroundings. There is plenty to examine in the ship itself, yet the sea and sky make the whole composition easy to take in from a distance. This print would suit a collection of maritime photographs or a room where turquoise and blue can connect with the existing colours.
