Haliburton Winter Forest Trunks Black and White Photography
Tall Straight Trees Above Snow and Small Evergreens
The trunks continue so far into the view that the forest becomes a pattern of vertical lines. Two larger trees stand nearer the camera, while many thinner forms repeat behind them. I photographed this Haliburton County woodland in black and white, with snow giving the lower part of the scene a bright, open base.
The nearest bark has enough detail to establish the scale. Small marks and rough surfaces remain clear on those larger trunks, then become less distinct as the trees recede. I enjoy how the repeated lines create depth without a path or a distant horizon. The eye finds its own route through the narrow gaps.
Below the tall trees, small evergreens introduce a different shape. Their spreading branches stand above the snow, breaking the otherwise upright rhythm. Bare twigs and uneven patches of ground add finer detail nearby. The contrast between the mature trunks and the smaller growth keeps the woodland from becoming a uniform wall of trees.
This photograph comes from 2018 in Haliburton, Ontario. I wanted the view to remain about the forest’s structure and the way winter makes it easier to see. The snow brightens the spaces between the trunks, while black and white keeps their darker outlines connected. Looking into the image, I notice both the repetition and the differences: one tree closer, another farther away, a small evergreen below, and a new gap opening deeper in the woods.
