Smooth Sand Curves Below a Rough Mountain Skyline
The nearest dune curves across the foreground with a dark hollow on one side and a pale ridge on the other. Beyond it, more sand shapes overlap before the land becomes a rough mountain range. I like the difference between those surfaces: smooth, simple curves close at hand and much more broken detail in the distance.
Fine ripples remain visible on the near sand, along with a faint line of small marks following the slope. The dune edges guide the eye sideways through the picture, then toward the mountains beyond. Those farther forms have ridges and folds of their own, but at a different scale and with a more irregular outline.
I photographed this landscape in 2010. Black and white brings the sand and mountains into the same tonal range without losing their contrast in texture. Above them, a band of cloud carries darker edges and pale streaks descending toward the distant terrain. The sky adds another layer of movement, while the foreground dune remains the clearest shape to begin with.
This dune and mountain wall art suits a study, living room or bedroom where a restrained landscape can create depth. Its monochrome tones work well with natural materials and simple furnishings. From farther away, the sweeping sand ridge gives the picture its structure; up close, the tiny ripples and changing shadows become more apparent. For me, the photograph holds a quiet tension between the smoothness of the dunes and the roughness of everything beyond them.
