A Bright Ribbon of Snow Through the Hillside
The snow makes an unexpected curve through this mountain hillside. It begins broadly in the foreground, narrows into the middle distance and bends back toward the left, with scattered trees following its edges. I like the way that bright shape gives the photograph a clear path for the eye without a road or trail needing to be visible.
Dark ground and exposed rock sit beside the snow, making its outline especially distinct. Slender trees rise from the slope, some close together and others standing alone against the sky. Higher up, further snow patches break the hillside into alternating light and dark areas. Large clouds fill the upper view, but the curved snowfield remains the strongest form below them. Black and white lets that relationship stand out: a broad pale shape moving through a more textured landscape of trees, stone and uneven ground.
I made this photograph in 2011, keeping the nearer snow edge and the higher ridge in the same composition. The smaller trees help show the scale, while the surface of the snow carries enough texture to stay tangible rather than becoming a blank white band. This mountain snow wall art suits a study, living room or cabin interior with restrained colours. It can appeal through the landscape itself or through the almost graphic quality of the curve. Looking closely reveals the individual branches and rough terrain around it, giving a simple first impression plenty of detail to return to.
