Cuban transportation street scene

It’s the kind of bus that tells you everything without saying a word. Parked on a cracked street in Santa Marta, Cuba, this relic of public transportation looks like it’s seen more revolutions, repairs, and reroutes than it cares to remember. The paint is chipped, the grill rusted, the windows fogged from decades of breath and heat—but it’s still running. Still carrying people from here to wherever they need to go.

This isn’t nostalgia—it’s resilience. A working-class icon in steel and grime. I was struck by the mix of wear and purpose. The handwritten route signs, the mismatched curtains, the quiet dignity of people behind the glass, going about their day without fanfare. There’s a whole economy of motion in this moment. A bus that shouldn’t still work but does. And right behind it, a horse-drawn cart—two timelines brushing shoulders like it’s nothing.

I wanted to capture the duality of this street scene. The contrast between decay and continuity. The grit of daily life with the soft colour palette of the surrounding buildings—faded paint, plaster wounds, and just enough pastel charm to remind you where you are.

This photograph is more than just transport—it’s a study in adaptation. Cuba has mastered that art. When parts run out, ingenuity steps in. When systems break down, people build workarounds. That energy—raw, improvised, and proud—is what I framed here.

If you find meaning in the beauty of persistence, if you respect the kind of functional poetry found only in places that never throw anything away, this piece might speak your language.

You’ll find more moments like this in my Daily Life Photography Collection—an ongoing project capturing quiet truths and lived experiences from streets around the world.
