Silky Water Winding Between Rocks Beneath a Jagged Ridge
The stream gives this mountain landscape a path to follow. Pale water winds between the rocks, widening in the foreground before narrowing into the distance beneath the jagged ridge. I photographed this scene in the Rocky Mountains in 2011, and the contrast between moving water and solid stone remains the part that holds my attention.
Standing beside the stream, I was struck by how the sound of the water seemed to silence everything else. It was just me, the mountains and the stream. That memory belongs to the photograph even though the finished image is quiet: the water becomes a soft, continuous ribbon, while the surrounding rock keeps its rough edges and layered surfaces.
Black and white brings those different textures together. Small patches of snow pick out the upper slopes, clouds cross the sky, and a distant conifer gives a modest sense of scale. Closer to the water, slabs of stone, gravel and grasses create a more detailed foreground. I like how the eye can move from those small things to the much larger ridge without losing the stream along the way.
This photograph would suit a room where a mountain landscape can offer space and movement without introducing strong colour. The flowing water gives it an easy rhythm, while the sharply defined peaks keep the scene grounded in the rugged terrain.
