Carved Wooden Face With Cigar Black and White Sculpture Photography
Wide Eyes and Heavy Brows Above a Downturned Mouth
The expression on this carved wooden figure caught my attention immediately. I photographed it in 2011, drawn to the wide eyes, heavy eyebrows and cigar projecting from its mouth. The face fills most of the vertical frame, with a dark background and part of a cigar sign behind it. Its exaggerated features give the photograph a playful character before I even begin looking at the wood.
I like the way the carving turns familiar facial details into bold shapes. The long nose sits between round eyes, deep lines surround the mouth, and the chin projects beneath it. Curved marks across the forehead and ridges along the hair add another rhythm above those larger forms. The figure can seem stern and comical at the same time, which is part of its appeal to me.
Black and white keeps the wood’s surface clear. Fine grain runs across the lighter face, while shadow gathers in the deeper carved areas. The darker clothing gives the head a firm base within the frame. The cigar adds a small horizontal accent against the mostly upright composition, and its rough end provides a different texture beside the smoother facial curves.
This sculpture photograph offers a characterful piece for a study, den or room that welcomes a little humour. It has enough detail for a close look, while the face remains easy to recognise from across the space. For me, the image preserves the pleasure of finding an expressive object whose carved features and material texture make it feel almost like a personality encountered during the day.
