Hanging Moss Above Dark Water and Cypress Reflections
Long strands of Spanish moss fill the upper half of this black and white photograph of Caddo Lake, Texas. Beneath them, cypress trunks widen at the waterline and repeat in dark reflections. I made the image in 2021, concentrating on the dense curtain of vegetation rather than a broad view of the lake.
The moss is what first holds my eye here. It hangs at different lengths, crossing branches and partly concealing the trees behind it. Smaller leaves introduce a finer pattern between those vertical strands. The resulting layers make it difficult to find a single edge to the forest, which is part of the photograph's appeal for me.
I left a clear band of water along the bottom. Its quieter surface gives the tangled canopy room to stand out, while the reflected trunks extend the scene downward. Near the middle, a lighter opening between the trees draws the eye through the otherwise closely packed growth. That small patch of space helps organize a detailed composition.
In monochrome, the scene rests on the differences between pale hanging moss, darker trunks and soft reflections. I wanted the photograph to retain the lake's stillness while giving close attention to these textures. It brings a layered woodland presence to a living room, study or restful bedroom, especially where a rich natural subject can sit comfortably within a restrained colour scheme.
