Custom House Wharf Portland Maine | Wall Art
The Porthole restaurant and fountain on Custom House Wharf in the Old Port district of Portland, Maine
One of the most interesting sights along the waterfront is the Customs House Wharf. It got its name from the fact that the Custom House sits directly across the street. Because there hasn't been much construction along this wharf in Portland, it looks like the city's oldest wharf.
The street still retains the old cobblestone roadway and the run-down buildings from the 1930s that have been converted into fish markets, restaurants, and other small businesses. Even the unique wooden sidewalk differentiates this area from other waterfront districts.
A fantastic way to get a sense of Portland is to stroll down the Custom House Wharf, which is like stepping back in time.
The Harbor Fish Market, which retains its traditional fishmongers and offers a large selection of fresh fish, is, without a doubt, the most well-known establishment on the waterfront.
The Porthole restaurant and tavern, with its distinctive Coca-Colas retro sign, has been a local institution for a significant amount of time and continues to enjoy widespread acclaim. Even the distinct aroma of sea salt in the air is a distinguishing New England quality.
I photographed this image in the wee hours of the morning on an overcast day with no traffic. I love how the Coca-Cola sign draws you in, and you are compelled to run your eyes down the street. The empty street focuses on the distinct character of Portland's New England harbor.
