Boardwalk to Manhattan Across the East River

I shot this one on a grey morning in 2005, long before Instagram tourists turned this spot into a circus. Back then, the boardwalk under the Brooklyn Bridge still had a kind of local quiet to it—a space to think, to breathe, to look across at that Manhattan skyline and feel small in the best kind of way.

This composition pulls you right down the planks of the boardwalk, past empty benches and into the East River, with the Brooklyn Bridge drawing a strong line to the horizon. I framed it this way intentionally—a gentle lead-in that mimics the pace of an early morning walk. No chaos, no yellow cabs—just the stillness before the city wakes up.

The sky, though brooding, wasn’t angry. Just heavy. And in black and white, that weight really settles in—bringing texture to the clouds and structure to the bridge’s towers. There’s an unspoken contrast happening too: the hard stone of the bridge versus the soft light brushing against the water. I love that kind of tension. It keeps a photograph from going flat.

If you’ve ever stood in that space, you know it’s not just a view—it’s a feeling. The river, the city, the bones of the bridge… it’s New York holding its breath. This print captures that exact moment. A kind of timelessness that I think speaks louder in monochrome.

For interior design, this image does a lot without trying too hard. It fits effortlessly into modern, industrial, or minimalist spaces. Pair it with raw concrete, exposed wood, or cool tones and you’ll see what I mean. But it also works on its own, anchoring a room with a quiet kind of confidence.

If bridges speak to your sense of connection, explore more in my Bridge Photography Collection. And if you’re drawn to the sweep of skylines and the soul of urban spaces, you’ll find plenty more in City Skylines Wall Art.
