I spent close to an hour walking and talking with him about life, music, the Yankees, and whatever else surfaced. That time mattered. By the time I raised the camera, there was no need to direct him or ask for an expression. I simply waited. For me, this is where \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/dankosmayer.com\/collections\/street-photography-wall-art\" title=\"black and white street photography\"\u003eblack and white street photography\u003c\/a\u003e becomes most interesting—when the photograph grows out of a real exchange rather than a passing glance.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat holds me here is his direct, wide-eyed gaze. It looks almost startled at first, but that was simply part of his natural presence. Deep lines run across his forehead and around his eyes, his white mustache breaks across the center of the frame, and wiry gray hair curls from beneath a worn baseball cap. The jacket collar, pale shirt, creased skin, and small irregularities in every surface give the portrait a remarkable amount of physical texture. Behind him, the Manhattan background falls away into soft darkness, leaving only blurred shapes and fragments of lettering. Nothing competes with the face.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI believed he was homeless at the time, although that was never what I wanted the photograph to be about. What stayed with me was the person. He had not eaten that day, so afterward I took him to a Chinese restaurant and told him to order whatever he wanted. He ordered a lot, ate it all, and we kept talking. It was a small thing in the course of a day, but it changed how I remember making this photograph. The frame is inseparable from that hour together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI chose black and white because color would have added information I did not need. The tonal separation brings attention to the eyes, mustache, skin, hair, and worn clothing, while the close vertical composition keeps the encounter immediate. This is not a portrait built around polish. It is about presence, age, texture, and the brief trust that can exist between two strangers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints.
