weathered-blue-door-facade-ooty-india
Weathered Blue Door And Decaying Facade Ooty India | Limited Edition of 10

Peeling Plaster Boarded Window And Layers Of Time

I made this photograph in Ooty, in the Nilgiri Hills of southern India, where an aging house stopped me almost entirely because of its surfaces. The blue wooden door was the first thing I noticed. Its paint had faded, cracked and worn unevenly through years of exposure, yet enough turquoise and deep blue remained to hold its place against the pale, battered wall. Beside it, a small window had been closed behind rough wooden boards, adding another layer to a facade that seemed to have accumulated its history rather than simply grown old.

I have always been attracted to scenes like this. My weathered architectural photography often begins with the same fascination: peeling paint, fractured plaster, corroded hardware, exposed wiring and surfaces that no longer hide what time has done to them. Here, cream, tan, faded blue and traces of violet overlap across the wall. Sections of plaster have fallen away, darker staining gathers near the base, and broken masonry lies scattered along the ground. Even the loosely hanging electrical wires contribute to the feeling that the building has been altered, repaired and altered again.

What interests me most is not decay for its own sake. I find myself wondering what this wall looked like when everything was new. The door once closed cleanly into its frame. The plaster was once intact. Someone chose the colors, fitted the locks and used this entrance as part of an ordinary life. Who lived here? Who worked here? What happened between that beginning and the surface I found with my camera? A photograph cannot answer those questions, and that uncertainty is precisely what keeps me looking.

The composition is deliberately straightforward. I wanted the architecture itself to carry the photograph: the tall blue door on one side, the boarded square window on the other, and the irregular vertical division of damaged plaster between them. There is very little here that feels polished or decorative, which allows every crack, stain, brush of color and rough edge to remain visible.

I offer this photograph as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me and accompanied by a certificate of authenticity. I print using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, preserving the subtle color shifts and fine surface detail that are so important to this image.

I can see this piece working particularly well for collectors drawn to old architecture, India, textured surfaces, rustic interiors and photographs where evidence of time becomes the subject itself. For me, it belongs naturally among photographs of old entrances and forgotten facades where the smallest architectural details suggest much larger stories, particularly my weathered door wall art.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2010

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/weathered-blue-door-facade-ooty-india-2.jpg?v=1788898016
