painted-garage-door-graffiti-tivoli-italy
Painted Garage Door Street Art Tivoli | Limited Edition of 10

A Weathered Mural Across A Tivoli Garage Door

I photographed this old garage door while walking through Tivoli, Italy, and it is one of those scenes that became more interesting the longer I stood in front of it. At first, the painted mural takes over. A seated figure appears across the metal shutter, surrounded by dark shapes and the suggestion of an interior scene. Then the rest of the building begins to emerge: the aging stone, stained plaster, exposed wiring, old utility boxes, faded paint, graffiti, and weeds pushing up along the bottom of a door that looks as though it has not moved in a very long time. It is the kind of layered street scene that draws me toward Italy wall art photography because the photograph is as much about the accumulated life of the place as it is about the architecture itself.

Above the garage door, a large arched opening is filled with radiating ironwork that almost forms a fan. Faded flowers and decorative paint follow the curve of the arch, while another painted section continues across the wall to the left. The mural does not sit neatly on a blank surface. It competes with cracks, repairs, grime, stickers, pipes and decades of weathering. Even the small number plaque high on the wall becomes part of the story.

What I love about this photograph is that the mural is not really the subject by itself. For me, the photograph is about the culture and everyday life that created the entire scene. Someone decided that this deteriorating garage deserved color, figures and flowers. Later came more graffiti, more stains, more repairs and more decay. Nothing replaced what was already there. Everything simply accumulated.

That layering is what separates this image from a straightforward photograph of street art. My **graffiti wall art photography** often interests me most when the artwork becomes inseparable from the surface beneath it, and that is exactly what happened here. The warm browns, faded reds, muted greens, black paint and weathered gray metal all sit naturally together. The cobblestone street along the bottom adds another texture, while the soft light allows the smallest details in the stone and plaster to remain visible without overwhelming the mural.

I photographed this scene on location in Tivoli rather than seeking out a particular mural. I found it by looking at the streets the way I usually do when traveling: slowly enough to notice the things that are easy to walk past. The more I looked, the more I found, and that quality remains in the finished photograph.

As wall art, I think this works particularly well in interiors that suit architectural photography, European street scenes, urban textures, aged surfaces and subdued earth tones. From across a room the arch and painted figure establish the composition; closer inspection reveals the scratches, weeds, wires, graffiti and crumbling masonry that give the photograph its character.

Each limited edition print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. I print using archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, with the edition limited to only ten prints across all sizes.

The weathered surfaces and layered artwork also make this a natural addition to my graffiti wall art collection.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2024

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/painted-garage-door-graffiti-tivoli-italy-2.jpg?v=1788700293
