This image features an elder Tibetan man adding wood to his well-used fireplace made of stone. Prayer flags hang across the ritual holly area, and many sticks of incense litter the old fire pit. Fire is used during Himalayan Buddhist exorcism rituals. Tibetan Buddist first offers food and other offerings, and a lama makes a mandala on the altar with sand. The final step to drive off demons is when the food is thrown on a fire made of yak dung and kindling.
The older adult in his 70s or 80s has a quizzical look as he looks back at me. He is dressed in well-worn clothing with a bright yellow toque.
