Being there, I was struck by the scale of the landscape and by how naturally the rider and bird seemed to belong within it. I chose the rear view because it lets the viewer enter the scene rather than stand outside it. We follow the horse forward and see what the rider sees: open steppe, rolling mountains, and a vast sky.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe black-and-white treatment holds the image together. Without color, attention moves directly to the layered feathers, the worn surface of the rider’s coat, the patterned belt and embroidered clothing, the horse’s long tail, and the loose reins hanging at the left. The eagle’s pale tail feathers break against the darker body, while the soft hills and cloud-filled sky give the wings a clean background.
