I spent a week living with this group of riders, eating with them and sleeping in yurts heated by coal. Being present for their daily routines gave me time to move beyond a staged portrait and watch how the rider, horse, and eagle worked together.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat makes the image successful for me is the way three distinct figures become one composition. The eagle’s open wings create the largest shape, the rider’s weathered face holds the center, and the horse’s alert expression anchors the bottom of the frame. Heavy fur, layered feathers, leather tack, and the distant Mongolian landscape give the photograph a rich range of texture. Converting the scene to black and white removes distracting color and lets those forms, expressions, and tonal relationships carry the image.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThere is movement here, but also control.
