Exterior detail of the unusual Aqua Tower designed by Studio Gang
I have visited Chicago dozens of times over the past three decades. I find it one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in the world. When photographing modern architecture, I focus on the abstract qualities of line, shape, pattern, texture, contrast, tone, and repetition. This photo contains closely framed, black-and-white details from the architecture of the Chicago buildings. This black and white architecturally-themed fine-art print is close-cropped and features three distinct buildings; the Blue Cross Blue Shield building on the left, the Swissotel building on the right, and the award-winning Aqua building in the center.
Jeanne Gang, the architect, has sculpted the Aqua to give it a more distinctive presence. The swelling and receding, offset curving balconies create a tower whose incredibly sensuous profile has become an instant Chicago icon. The distinctive rippling Aqua won Emporis's 2009 Skyscraper of the Year award.
