The man looks directly into my camera, his face filling much of the frame, with deeply defined features, white hair, a full beard, and a cigarette resting between his lips. I photographed him in Mysore, India, from very close range, and that physical proximity is an important part of the photograph. The perspective feels immediate rather than distant; I was not observing him from across the street.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHis eyes hold the photograph together. They are sharply defined beneath heavy brows, surrounded by wrinkles and the accumulated texture of an older face. The cigarette becomes the second small point of attention, giving the portrait another layer without overwhelming the expression. That combination of face, gesture, and direct eye contact connects naturally with my broader \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/dankosmayer.com\/collections\/street-photography-wall-art\" title=\"black and white street photography\"\u003eblack and white street photography\u003c\/a\u003e, where I am often drawn to people whose presence is more compelling than anything happening around them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI deliberately left space to his right rather than centering him. The pale horizontal wall and repeating metal railing establish just enough of the surroundings to make this feel like a street encounter rather than a studio portrait. Those geometric lines contrast with the irregular texture of his hair, beard, skin, and loosely draped clothing. The black-and-white treatment removes unnecessary color and concentrates everything on tonal separation: white hair against dark skin, bright fabric against deeper shadows, and fine facial detail against the softer background.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhat continues to interest me is how close I was when I made photographs like this. Working with a fixed wide-angle lens meant that if I wanted the person larger in the frame, I had to physically move toward them. That changed the relationship between photographer and subject. Here, the closeness is visible. The viewer does not feel separated from the man; the portrait has the intimacy of a brief face-to-face encounter.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis photograph is offered as a limited edition of only 10 prints. Each print is personally signed by me, includes a certificate of authenticity, and is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper.
