I did too. I arrived about thirty minutes before dawn and spent the early morning exploring the rocky shoreline around the beacon while the first light slowly appeared across the Atlantic. By the time I finished, the village itself was still completely deserted. My wife and dogs remained asleep in our Sprinter van, leaving me free to wander through the harbor and enjoy one of those rare moments when there is nobody around and no reason to rush.

As I walked through the village, I noticed something unusual. The water inside the cove was almost perfectly still. Anyone who has spent time around the ocean knows how rare that can be. The harbor had settled into a brief window of slack water where the surface became a mirror. Instead of focusing on the lighthouse again, I turned my attention toward the historic homes, fishing sheds, and weathered buildings lining the shoreline.

This black-and-white photograph captures that quiet moment. Wooden structures stand among the massive granite boulders that have defined Peggy's Cove for generations. Fishing sheds rest at the water's edge while larger homes overlook the harbor beyond. The distant lighthouse quietly watches over the scene without becoming the main subject. What draws me back to this image are the reflections. The calm water transforms familiar buildings into abstract shapes and patterns, stretching and bending them across the harbor surface.

The longer I looked, the more interesting the reflections became. The architecture remains sharp and recognizable above the waterline, while below it the buildings dissolve into flowing textures and distorted forms. The contrast between solid granite, weathered wood, and liquid reflections creates a balance that feels both peaceful and visually complex.

Black and white was the natural choice for this scene. Without color competing for attention, the textures, shapes, reflections, and light become the focus. The weathered shingles, rough stone, calm water, and soft dawn light work together to create an image that feels timeless. It could have been photographed yesterday or decades ago.

I photographed this scene on location during one of the most peaceful mornings I have experienced in Peggy's Cove. The combination of an empty village, calm water, and early morning light created conditions that lasted only a short time before the harbor returned to its normal activity.

This photograph works beautifully in coastal homes, cottages, offices, living rooms, and spaces where a calm maritime atmosphere is desired. The combination of architecture, history, reflection, and shoreline textures makes it a piece that reveals new details over time.

I personally sign each limited-edition print, and each includes a certificate of authenticity. The photograph is produced using archival pigment inks and museum-quality materials designed for long-term display.
