I wanted to see the city before the traffic, tourists, and noise took over. At that hour, the streets felt almost private. Shop shutters were still down, food stalls were being prepared, and people were settling into the quiet routines that would soon disappear into the movement of the day. That quieter side of the country became an important part of my Vietnam wall art photography from this trip.

What held me here was the gentleman sitting beside a small street food cart. His long gray beard, worn T-shirt, plaid shorts, sandals, and folded arms give the portrait an immediate sense of character, but it was his expression that made me stop. He looks toward the camera without appearing to perform for it. There is no smile, no obvious curiosity, no sense that he wants anything from the moment. He simply looks back at me with a calm, steady expression.

Around him is the visual clutter and texture that makes Hanoi so fascinating to photograph. A bright Vietnamese bún ốc riêu cua sign glows above the food cart. Behind him, a corrugated metal shop shutter remains closed, while a narrow doorway, shelves, wiring, foliage, plastic stools, signs, and uneven pavement build layer after layer into the composition. The sidewalk is dark and slightly reflective in places, and much of the surrounding storefront falls quietly into shadow.

I converted the photograph to black and white because color was never the important part of this image for me. Removing it simplified everything. The photograph becomes about his face, beard, posture, the illuminated sign, and the way the early light moves through the surrounding darkness. There is plenty happening visually, yet the man remains unmistakably at the center of it.

I photographed this on location in Hanoi during those first three mornings when I deliberately went out before dawn. There were almost no tourists around, and instead of chasing recognizable landmarks, I could watch the city prepare itself for another day. That slower rhythm gave me a very different view of Hanoi and produced some of the photographs I remember most clearly from the beginning of the trip.

As wall art, I think this photograph works especially well for someone drawn to documentary photography, human expression, Asian street culture, Vietnam, or black and white interiors. Its strong vertical composition also makes it particularly useful for narrower walls in a study, hallway, office, reading room, or contemporary living space. It has enough graphic structure to hold a wall from a distance, but the face and small details reward a closer look.

Each limited edition print is personally signed by me and includes a certificate of authenticity. The photograph is produced with archival pigment inks on premium archival paper, with the edition strictly limited to 10 prints. This photograph is also part of my broader collection of Hanoi wall art photography.

© Dan Kosmayer, 2026

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0552/9685/2047/files/bearded-man-hanoi-street-black-and-white-1.jpg?v=1787577209
